I was proud to stand on the protest line yesterday with Ontarians pushing back against Doug Ford’s agenda and demanding a government that protects people, public services, and democracy – not one that leaves communities fighting for the basics.

Fair Vote Canada also spoke about the urgent need for electoral reform and proportional representation, where the seats a party receives more closely reflect how people actually voted. Ontario’s current system gave one party 100% of the governing power with only 43% of the vote – a powerful reminder that democracy must mean more than casting a ballot every few years.

I was honoured to address the crowd as a candidate for Mayor of Hamilton and speak about my housing platform. I believe we must use publicly owned land to build genuinely affordable, non-profit, rent-geared-to-income, co-operative, and community-led housing. We must also repair and protect the public and affordable housing we already have, strengthen tenant protections, and require meaningful affordability in new development.

Building new units cannot become an excuse to neglect existing tenants. Housing must come before parking, political convenience, and private profit.

The struggles for housing justice and democratic reform are connected. When political power is concentrated and communities are ignored, decisions are made without the people most affected. I am running for mayor because Hamilton deserves leadership that listens, acts transparently, and treats housing as a human right.

Change begins when people stand together, speak clearly, and refuse to accept that injustice is inevitable. The organizers of the province-wide protests describe them as a collective effort to defend rights and challenge policies affecting housing, health care, education, and public accountability.
