Hamilton deserves clean air, clean neighbourhoods, and leaders who refuse to accept pollution as “just the way things are.”

This week, residents like @t.l.sullivan across the lower city – especially in Wards 3 and 4 – reported black soot covering their yards, patios, cars, and even local splash pads. Parents watched their children’s feet turn black after playing outside. Dog owners found the same black residue coating their pets after a walk. No family should have to wonder what they’re breathing or what their children are being exposed to.

This isn’t a new problem. Hamilton has lived with industrial pollution for generations, and too often our communities have been told to simply live with it. We know the health impacts are real, and we know the burden falls disproportionately on the neighbourhoods closest to heavy industry.

As Mayor, I will push for stronger environmental oversight, greater transparency around air quality monitoring, and real accountability from both industry and the Province. Hamiltonians deserve timely investigations when pollution events occur – not silence, delays, or finger-pointing.

I’ve also heard from residents who have raised concerns about black sludge on their lawns and sidewalks that’s getting on their dogs and tracking into their homes. These concerns deserve to be taken seriously. If you’re experiencing this in your neighbourhood, I encourage you to document it, report it, and continue making your voice heard.

Our city shouldn’t have to choose between good jobs and healthy communities. We can protect both. Hamilton deserves clean air, safe neighbourhoods, and a government willing to stand up for the people who live here.
