We were grateful for the opportunity to speak and table at @sachahamont’s 4th annual conference this week.

Panelists and the keynote speaker @drblackdeer discussed how sexual violence and material deprivation of shelter are structurally connected.

Sexual violence has been used throughout the formation of the Canadian state to break kinship networks, Indigenous governance systems, and relationships to place, for the purpose of displacement, to facilitate European colonization and resource extraction. Sexual violence helps form, and destabilizes our ability to survive in this context. 

Ending the encampment ban, keeping public spaces public, and ultimately housing for all are necessary sexual violence prevention.
